In October 2010, 25-year-old graduate student Michele Carson traveled to Las Vegas with her best friend, Vicki Rojas, for a girls’ trip. On November 7, Michele's abandoned car was found running in West Covina while Michele was missing. Her burned and partially buried body was discovered in the Las Vegas desert, and investigators determined she had been strangled.

In November 2014, 22-year-old nursing assistant Carlesha Freeland-Gaither was abducted while walking home in Philadelphia. She fought back during the attack and deliberately left behind her phone and glasses, hoping someone would realize she was in danger. 18-year-old Amish teenager Samuel Hochstetler was accused of killing 28-year-old Rosanna Kinsinger in an Amish community near Rutland, Ohio.
